But on further review, Nader’s first loyalty appears to be to iconoclasm, and to leftist ideology second. He wanted to turn Washington on it’s head. He believes Trump will do that.

1. Ralph Nader got mugged by reality, or

That's been my take on him as well. Nader's real motivation has always been being an anti-establishment gadfly, which means that he's often preferred conservative populists to establishment liberals. He had good things to say about Ross Perot in the 1992 general election and about Pat Buchanan during the 1996 GOP primaries, so this isn't such a big change for him.
