That’s what thick curtains are for. And all year DST means winter sunrises of 8:30, no easy work around for that.

December on standard time in Idaho means sunrise at 7:53 AM and earliest sunset of 4:56 PM. Today the sunrise is at 5:50 AM MDT and sunset at 9:10 PM MDT. Having the sun up at 4:50 AM is a complete waste of sunlight for me. I work until 1:30 AM most days. Having sunlight to 9:10 PM means I have useful light after the workday (or at least I can slip in mowing the lawn in my 9 AM to 1:30 AM typical workday.
