I Am a Gay Man From Orlando. Why Can’t I Donate Blood? (N.Y. Times)
The New York Times ^ | 6/15/16 | Blake Lynch

Posted on 06/15/2016 9:35:06 AM PDT by Faith Presses On

...This week we faced a new challenge: mass violence in the very place we felt most comfortable, accepted and secure. After the attack, the city of Orlando and the state of Florida mobilized. Officials called on people in the area to donate blood for those who were injured in the shooting. Thousands of people have reportedly lined up to donate. But some of them — gay and bisexual men — are unable to.

As a registered nurse, I know the importance of donated blood...

(snip)

But many of the people who felt the tragedy most closely can’t offer their help. That's because the Food and Drug Administration bars sexually active gay men from donating. This ban is ostensibly in place to protect blood supplies from being contaminated with H.I.V. But it dates from a time before H.I.V. testing was standard practice for blood donations. It is now generally agreed that H.I.V. can be detected in the blood of an infected person within a matter of weeks. Donors should be assessed according to their risk — not their sexual orientation. In the wake of a hateful attack that left over a hundred people from our community dead or injured, this ban must be removed.

(snip)

Several years ago, I went to donate blood for a friend in nursing school who suffers from sickle cell anemia. To my shock, I was turned away after filling out a questionnaire that asked if I had ever had sexual contact with another man. According to the F.D.A.’s policy at the time, I was barred from donating blood for life. I was embarrassed and outraged. A few days later, my boyfriend (now husband) and I started a project called Banned4Life to fight this outdated policy.

Related thread: From the 2015 FDA report that carefully studied the whole matter and concluded the one-year ban was necessary:

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/3440453/posts

The FDA report answers all the arguments made by this author on why the ban is still needed, including why the HIV-infection threat posed by sexually active gay men is too great, and why testing of blood isn't enough.

This author also mentions how some blood donation centers around the country still haven't lifted the lifetime ban, but in some cases, at the least, that may be due to the collected blood being used in products sent to other countries that haven't lifted their lifetime bans (the FDA report mentions that scenario).

The author also says that blood donation screening should be based on assessing individual risk. The FDA report rejects that, and a National Institutes of Health report on Italy's policy, which is IRA, says that it really hasn't been a substantial change anyway, due to the questions asked effectively resulting in a lifetime ban for sexually active gay men:

Because, until the HIV test is proven to be 100% accurate, your blood might give someone a death sentence.

I Am a Gay Man From Orlando. Why Can’t I Donate Blood?

Because your life style choice makes you particularly prone to disgusting and life threatening diseases which can easily be spread through blood transfusions.

Making you feel good about yourself is not worth the killing and injuring of innocent people.

The duplicate thread doesn’t allow replies for some reason.

The lack of concern for gay men among liberals and among gays disgusts me. Conservatives don’t want them to die from a contagious and deadly disease. Liberals don’t want their feelings hurt and consider that more important than whether more people die of AIDS.

It’s not like there aren’t plenty of normal people to give blood. I heard there was a line around the block in Orlando of people coming to donate blood.

It's not just HIV. Homosexuals are a cesspool of vile diseases, among them Hepatitis C, which is also fatal.

Herpes, Syphilis, Gonorrhea, Chlamydia, HPV, and so on are all rife within the homosexual community.

Having 500 - 1000 sexual partners in a lifetime drastically increases the odds of being infected with diseases such as these.

Spreading this crap into the blood supply is insane, and we should Violently oppose this effort if necessary.

This thread mistakenly posted twice. The other one I got an error report on, which is why I posted the thread again, but the other one isn’t allowing replies to be posted anyway. Could you remove it then please? Thank you.

For the same reason I can’t because I had Hepatitis A when I was 12 years old, latent affects in the blood. Or my daughter who was born in Germany in 1984 can’t, a combination of the mad cow disease in Europe and Chernobyl during that time.

Science Fiction author Isaac Asimov also died from AIDS contracted through Tainted blood. Lots of people were killed as a result of tolerating homosexual behavior.

I’m a straight man from North Carolina. Why would I want you donating diseased blood to other people? Furthermore, why do we even have gay/lesbian perversion threads on Free Republic? There’s probably a Gay Pride site or whatever catering to gays and the beastiality inclined.

Simple you moron....you engage in high risk sexual activity. If you had travelled to Africa or a pika country you would not be allowed to donate either. it is imperative to keep the blood supply safe. Those who might be carrying cannot donate

"IN the 1980s, Bill Clinton's political cronies were selling HIV-and Hepatitis C-laced prison inmate blood to the world blood market. Unscreened prisoners would sell their blood for $7 (in prison script) per plasma unit to politically connected blood brokers who would then put it up for same on the world blood market for $50 per plasma unit. The company that brokered the blood was Health Management Associates, Inc. (HMA) Later in 1998, whistle-blower Mike Galster, under the pseudonym Michael Sullivan, wrote the novel BLOOD TRAIL, based on the scandal. "Although fiction, BLOOD TRAIL evolved from Sullivan's meditations on the true, tragic and ongoing story of a blood contamination that infected as many as 80,000 people in Canada," in inside flap read. "Thousands have died, many more have death sentences, and still more will suffer for life" War on Women pages 261-262
