No matter. My feeling is, you say anything rude or to a customer or have attitude, you might as well quit right there on the spot, or you are getting let go.

Doesn’t mean you have to take crap. If the customer behavior is egregious enough to cause you to be rude back, then you call your supervisor over.

I don’t want someone working for me who can’t maintain a front to a customer. I don’t care how uncivil that customer is. Granted, I may completely side with that employee, but if I have a code of conduct in place and a process to follow, they better do it. And that code of conduct will specifically bar contentious discourse with customers, and a process if it is encountered.

Correct.
Employees do not get into pissing matches with customers.
Disengage and call over managment.
Period.
Unless your an ignorant load mouth POS employee from Brooklyn.I supose?
