You are certainly correct and I could have been more accurate if I had read Wikipedia carefully. I think the below sentence works.

AR-15 is the Colt registered trademark for the ubiquitous civilian version of the military M-16 rifle. The key difference is the civilian version fires only semiautomatic.

The rulers of the newly Unified Republic Of Vietnam no longer required the services of the Thompsons and other former US military equipment held in the warehouses of the former South Vietnamese Army, since plenty of their own standardized AK47s were had for their purposes. They also scrapped out some of their own damaged or worn equipment at the same junkyard.
