At least 13 children and their adult instructor have died in a storm while boating on a lake in Russia’s northwestern region of Karelia, officials said Sunday.

Vladimir Markin, a spokesman for the nation’s main state investigative agency, said several boats with children overturned Saturday in a storm in Syamozero, 120 kilometres (75 miles) east of the border with Finland.

Of 47 children and four adult instructors in the boats, 13 children and one adult have died, Markin said.

I’ve heard that storms can come — literally — out of nowhere in parts of Russia, catching the impacted folks by surprise. There must be some weird weather patterns over there.

It happen here in the states just as well. Ask any fisherman that has ever been out on a central Texas lake.

We had a rule in Boy Scouts

If your feet are wet - you wear a life preserver. I don’t care how good a swimmer you are or how nice the day is...

Anywhere. Hot summer day off Long Island in a 30foot sailboat. I looked up and causually said, “I saw a sky exactly that color on the way to Hong Kong.”
Suddenly I screamed, “Drop the **** sails and get the engine started.” A bad memory kicked in.” We got the sails down and secured by 4 minutes. There were distress call all afternoon and (I think) a couple of sinkings and a number of injuries.
The lesson....On the water, take NOTHING for granted.
