I have two blue and golds. They are pretty smart. The African Grey and Panama yellow head are much, much more vocal. My male Blue and Gold knows one word. My Panama Yellow head I gave away because he wouldn’t shut up.
My 7 year old Doberman gets so frustrated trying to talk it is almost comic. He tries desperately to talk and we know what he is trying to say but the poor boy just doesn’t have the anatomical apparatus. He sits and watches my wife talk intently such that it seems he is trying to learn how to do it.
I think we have to be careful we don’t equate vocalizations with intelligence. I have no doubt the Doberman is smarter than the macaws. They sit in a cage while the dog has the run of the house and yard. Something to ponder.
Can get around that with a touchpad.
They've done it with apes.
That's because, for all intents and purposes, the parrots in our lives are still wild animals while dogs have undergone thousands of years of animal husbandry which bred out all undesirable traits, such as independent thought and bred in desirable traits such as obedience.
We haven't tamed parrots so much as gained their trust. OTOH, we've completely tamed dogs.
