Allow me to propose an alternate ending for this sentence:

If Cruz comes out with a strong endorsement of Trump, he’ll make sure it’s too late to do Trump any good when he actually needed it.

I.e.: if Cruz endorses, it will only be 1, when all else has failed, and 2, long past the time it could actually have helped.

I don’t believe a Cruz endorsement would help Trump at this point. In fact, it might even hurt Trump.
