Sinn Fein's Martin McGuinness has called for a referendum on a united Ireland following the EU referendum result.
Speaking to the national Irish broadcaster RTE, Mr McGuinness said the British government has a "democratic imperative" to call a referendum on whether Northern Ireland should leave the United Kingdom and unite with the Irish Republic.

Bingo. They got explosives from Libya.
Northern Ireland is mostly Protestant, while the rest of “Ireland is not only mainly Catholic...but Irish Catholic. Now the strong religious factions are breaking down so a united Ireland is possible IMO. The real hatred of each others religion began with William and Mary of Orange when they took the throne and legislated against just the Irish Catholics, forbidding them owning land, forbidding the Church holding mass, etc. Feelings run deep and it has taken centuries to get over...but religion seems to be a failing enterprise nowadays so perhaps everyone can live in harmony.”
You might want to look at “United Irishmen 1798”
It ain’t all about religion. I hope the violence is over, though.
My people left NO in 1718, never to return.
Good luck w/that! NI mostly brit protestant) anyway. Irish in the minority there.
In case you haven’t noticed, most are now comfortable w/the situation since the RUC has been replaced by the PSNI (local vs foreign policing) as part of the Good Friday agreement.
The sliver of folks still in the offshoots of the IRA are more about smuggling and criminal enterprise more than “Irish Freedom”.
Favorite goods? Women, diesel, and cigarettes. One major crew centered in Belfast, the other in Derry.
My first question is: which soccer team will represent them in the EUROS???
Good luck with that.
Scotland and Ireland haven’t been hit hard by the wave of muslims immigrants so they wanted to stay in the EU. Ship a few thousands refugees up there and see how they feel next year.
Better it come about peacefully, like this. Northern Ireland exists separately from the rest of Ireland because of threats made by Protestants, including one lord, regarding terrorism against the other Irish if the British government didn’t ignore the result of the island-wide referendum to be independent from Britain.
I hate the gutless bastards in the IRA. I remember this, from a BBC byline, if nobody else does:
1979: IRA bomb kills Lord Mountbatten
The Queen’s cousin, Lord Louis Mountbatten, has been killed by a bomb blast on his boat in Ireland.
One of the earl’s twin grandsons, Nicholas, 14, and Paul Maxwell, 15, a local employed as a boat boy, also died in the explosion.
The attack was followed only hours later by the massacre of 18 soldiers, killed in two booby-trap bomb explosions near Warrenpoint close to the border with the Irish Republic.
The IRA has already admitted carrying out the attack on Lord Mountbatten.
A statement from the organisation said: “This operation is one of the discriminate ways we can bring to the attention of the English people the continuing occupation of our country.”
Lord Mountbatten, aged 79, and his family had traditionally spent their summer holiday at their castle in County Sligo, north west of Ireland.
They were aboard his boat, Shadow V, which had just set off from the fishing village of Mullaghmore, when the bomb detonated around 1130 BST.
A witness said the blast blew the boat “to smithereens” and hurled all seven occupants into the water.
Nearby fishermen raced to the rescue and pulled Lord Mountbatten out of the water.
But his legs had been almost severed by the explosion and he died shortly afterwards.
Other survivors were pulled out of the water and rushed to hospital.
At least one person is believed to be in a critical condition.
The attack has called into question the security arrangements surrounding the Mountbatten party. Lord Mountbatten never had a bodyguard.
The local police kept watch on Classiebawn castle for the one month a year Lord Mountbatten spent there.
But his boat was left unguarded in the public dock in Mullaghmore where it was moored.
The village is only 12 miles from the Northern Ireland border and near an area known to be used by IRA members as a refuge.
An interesting chap who drove us before letting us off was in Castleford, Ireland. He told us that many of the IRA ‘stash’ arrived there. Also said.....”Whatever anyone tells you.....”The Troubles” aren’t over.” He treated us to a couple of pints while he drank ‘boilermakers’. Never knew if he made it home OK. Was pretty blinkered when he left us on his journey home.
They are straight up communist terrorists.
Burn everything English but their coal.
Kick the squatters out!
