You can judge what they value, what is important to them and what they say and do. Trump -an evangelical born-again Christian? These don't fit. Trump and evangelical Christian social conservatism? Nah. He doesn't even understand the issues or support the cultural war they're supposed to be fighting.
What's wrong with this picture?
It's awkward to for evangelical Christians and Trump both. I can understand the mutual benefit, but it's embarrassing to the pastors.
"He's not Hillary." and "He met with the pastors." That has to be enough for the Christian Right. Go with it.
I don’t see anything wrong or awkward with this picture.
I think your skepticism is coming from your image of Trump over the years, not being able to see him in other way. But you need to understand, just because someone has become a believer, doesn’t mean the evidence of that change is immediately recognized.
The Scriptures refer to new believers as “babes in Christ,” and are urged to “desire the sincere milk of the Word” so they may grow by it. The apostle Paul said mature Christians are those who eat the meat of the Word and are consistent in their doctrine and testimony.
If Mr. Trump has recently received Christ as Savior, you can’t expect him to suddenly “act evangelical” in every area of his life. The Holy Spirit has to be allowed to work in him as he yields and learns about his new faith. There is a growing process for every Christian, and many of them are still out of the will of God in areas of their life.
Just because you can’t see Donald Trump as an evangelical Christian, doesn’t mean he couldn’t be one. Remember, the believers in the book of Acts, could never have imagined that a man named, Saul, who persecuted them, hauled them to prison, and consented to their deaths, would become the greatest evangelist for Jesus Christ the world has ever known.
