German lawmakers approved a law that essentially bans fracking, ending years of dispute over the controversial technology to release oil and gas locked deep underground.

The text approved on Friday does not outlaw conventional drilling for oil and gas, but leaves it up to state governments to decide on individual cases.

But fracking, or hydraulic fracturing, which is carried out by blasting a mixture of water, sand and chemicals underground to release shale oil and gas, will be banned. …

Germany's problems came long before Hitler and the Nazis, long before the Kaiser. They came when the majority of Germans began losing their faith in Jesus Christ. Once, the German States were the bulwark of Protestant Christianity in Europe, and were strong Catholics as well.

In the 18th and 19th Centuries, you had German philosophers and theologians who attempted to remove God from the centerpiece of German life. Some thought the Lord made man perfectable, some simply went for the end of belief in God.

The Germans I've met over the years are extremely intelligent...and have NO belief nor faith in God, even ones who are clergy. Most are humanists of one form or another. Their turning away from God and turning to their own superiority has led Germans to be very arrogant about their superiority, and this has been long before the Nazis and continues to this day.

I’m sure this puts a big smile in Putin’s face.

I hope he squeezes them down to their last euro come this winter.

But they’re in the process of building a bunch of coal burning power generating plants.

Well, I guess energy independence is not really important to you, then.

If Germany shoots itself in the energy foot one more time, it won’t have any toes left.

The German population harbours a deep suspicion towards fracking and fears its impact on the environment and, in particular, drinking water resources.

It seems we both have selected the above quotation to express the essence of the situation. As one who lives in Bavaria I can tell you that the matter is not one open for intellectual debate but rather it is a settled matter of received truth just as valid here as the proposition that the world is not flat but round.

I meet with Germans at least once a week and we discuss current affairs. When I advanced the proposition that there was no evidence, repeat "evidence," of fracking ever causing any damage in the United States I was rounded upon by my German friends and told I was flatly in error. Next week I photocopied all of the reports emanating from the governmental agencies in the United States, some having evidence statewide and some extending to multistate level, showing on the letterhead of the United States there was no evidence of damage caused by fracking.

When I presented these papers, they were dismissed as lies of America. These people had seen with their own eyes flaming water coming out of the tap and that was simply dispositive of the issue. That movie has done damage, similar to the damage caused by Columbine. In Germany there is no platform with reach to the whole demographic such as conservatism has in America in talk radio. In the absence of organized resistance, one sees the fixing of national opinions and the same one-sided result occurs on the issue of global warming.

As one FReeper pointed out, this will cost the Germans (and me) more for our utilities, (our electric bills are already the highest in Europe) and more to heat our homes. It will leave the Germans in a place in which they are far more likely to link up with Russia and turn their faces away from America, an eventuality which has precipitated at least one world war.at a minimum, it will sustain the price the Russians get for their gas and oil and inhibit efforts to contain Putin's Russia and his petro producing ally in Iran.

Before we rejoice in our own wisdom and congratulate ourselves for not being as foolish as the Germans, reflect for a moment on our policies regarding subsidies for biofuels and let us ask ourselves why do we persist in these policies, cui bono? Are we any wiser?

I don’t see the Germans making friends with the Russians. I see all of Europe looking at the Russian Bear and deciding that the English Lion is a much better option. Once they stopping crying in their beer, they will take note that the French are the only ones now in the Euro with nukes....and the French have a history of looking after themselves first.

So pretty soon they will come down through the chunnel carrying flowers and chocolates and begging the Brits to come back.

And the Brits might just tell them to .....fook off.

Hilarious in a nation that has some of the worlds largest coal mines and the worlds largest mining equipment. Just head out to eastern Germany and take a gander at their strip mines. It is on a scale that is hard to imagine from picture. You literally stand on the edge of something man dug that is the size of the grand canyon.

But fracking...Fracking is bad.

I don’t know if this is apocryphal or not but I believe it. A Czech friend of mine was telling me of a “professor” from an Austrian college that was protesting a Czech nuclear power plant from which Austria buys it’s power said “(roughly translated from Czech) we don’t need nuclear power. We get our power from the plug.” (

(More literally) We can watch TV by candle light. Czechs have a very dry and acerbic humor.

They can be extremely intelligent but they can be also "extremely blind."

The Muslims will appreciate that oil/gas that is being ‘saved’ for them when they take over Germany one day.

If the Fatherland ever has oil supply issues, all they have to do is take over another country that has the oil.

It can be done quickly, as if by a stroke of lightning.

The USSR preached humanism too.

And much of what Marx wrote was antisemitic, proclaiming the god of the Jews to be “money”.

“We” persist in biofuel subsidy? That’s like saying “we” persist in promoting gay marriage as if conservatives accepted that.
