I don't consider polio to have been low hanging fruit at all.
I concede there have been great improvements in the treatments of some diseases. However, my point was that there have been no cures and/or vaccines that prevent serious disease, like the polio vaccine did. None, zero, nada.
Sixty years ago we got shots to prevent polio, measles, mumps, rubella, diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, small pox, hepatitis, and more. Since then - with all the money, the technology, super computers, etc., - nothing.

AIDS is the most recent, and that is just about cured.
You cannot say “cancer” because there are so many types.
