I always think back to Jonas Salk who discovered a polio vaccine (1955) in just a few years of work and a few million dollars.
Sixty years later (60!) and there have been no medical breakthroughs that come close to his success, and I just have to wonder why?

After you get rid of the low hanging fruit, the rest is pretty tough.
But that said, talk to people who have had heart surgery or cancer in the last few years. The work on genetic modification in the treatment of killer diseases ten years ago is amazing.
