That’s just politics. Ireland is still in the EU and Scotland may join it, so English will still be an official language, though its status may sink a little at EU HQ.

Several tweeters asked Mr Menard and Mr Melenchon what the majority English speaking Irish would do, should English disappear.

Too bad, Mr Menard implied, pointing out that Ireland’s first language was officially Gaelic.

Why would the EU want to admit Scotland? It is now a net debtor to the UK Treasury, and would require subsidies from the EU.
