My parents never despised guns before coming to America, except when they were in the hands of bad people.
When they came here 30 years ago, they were intrigued by the American way of life and boundless freedom here. They knew Americans owned firearms (especially the likes of actor John Wayne) and proudly touted the Second Amendment. Compared to the U.S., Soviet-occupied Lithuania was gun-free except for those in elite governmental positions. My dad always said the Soviets succeeded in oppressing Lithuanians and others by first disarming them. I always knew he was right, but aimed to confirm his assertions. Low and behold, he was right about gun confiscation as a pretext to installing tyranny in a country.
After the take-over of Lithuania there was a low-level and mostly secret CIVIL WAR, there.
The resistors thought the Soviet take-over of Eastern Europe MUST be temporary —America would never permit this.
95% of them lived in underground forest BUNKERS, believe it or not, and it went on for maybe 10 years.
The most effective Soviet weapon against them were units of FORMER resistors, who hunted them down much more effectively than other Soviet assets.
There is a movie about it on Netflix that I saw a month ago.
Let us know if you remember the title. I’d like to see it.
me too
Inspirational, but also sad:

Strangely enough my Netflix search did not turn it up, but google pulled it up, lickety-split.
I had NO IDEA there was that civil war, I guess it was low-intensity and sort of an embarrassment to the Soviets.
here’s another movie on the same topic
The Invisible Front

Thanks. I suppose not many people know or knew about this fight for freedom. I went to East Berlin in ‘62 as a youngster on a bus tour not long after the wall went up. Even at that age I knew something sucked there. Big time.
Wait..!
I found it on Netflix!
It was, “The Invisible Front”, and it is still playing on Netflix.
Just saw your post!
Yes, indeed that was it, and it’s still playing on Netflix, as I see.
I had to dig around though my viewing history.
Never had ANY idea about that conflict, wow.
LOL! Someone else just posted that one. Still, worth a look at both of them.
I’d never heard of this story either. Will definitely check it out. Thanks.
I’ve been to Vilnius. It’s a beautiful city, especially the old town, not so much the Soviet era block style buildings in the inner city. The people are lovely and gracious. I have a wonderful framed tapestry showing Old Town in front, contrasted with the block buildings in the back. A gift from a friend who lives there.
Nice.
A Serb from Croatia told me their grandparents resisted by living in forests. Then after WWII, there was rebuilding. Then the Soviets came and the good people lived quiet poor lives looking over their shoulder because the Commies would have them killed. That is the crossroad of the world. The people have endured everything.
For later.
