So let me get this straight. These experimental cars, clearly with at least a few bugs to work out, are cruising down the same roads and streets as regular traffic. In other words, like lab rats the regular driving public is part of the experiment. I’d hate to be the insurance company that’s underwritten liability for Tesla.
Tesla could very well have a huge legal problem on their hands.
They are effectively selling a “self-driving” car before all of the legal and regulatory issues are dealt with.
I suspect the NHTSA is going to come down hard on Tesla before long.
Tesla limited the Autopilot to divided highways, because owners were being potentially negligent while enabling it for city driving. Some owners had to pay $2K to have the feature enabled. If you have to pay attention all the time and keep your hands on the wheel, what is the benefit of having the autopilot enabled?
