Putin signs sweeping surveillance measures into law; Snowden declares a ‘dark day for Russia’

Russian President Vladimir Putin signed legislation Thursday compelling telephone companies and internet providers to save and store the private communications of its customers, notwithstanding concerns raised by human rights advocates and big business alike.

Included within a package of amendments proposed as antiterrorism measures, the law will require telecoms to collect and keep copies of customers’ phone calls, text messages and emails for six months, as well as maintain metadata concerning those communications for up to three years.

Other provisions effectively outlaw the use of digital encryption within Russia and introduce new penalties for individuals accused of inciting terrorism through social media.

Edward Snowden, the former National Security Agency contractor who leaked information about the U.S. government’s intelligence gathering operations, said on Twitter that Mr. Putin’s signature authorizes “a repressive new law that violates not only human rights, but common sense,” and “must be condemned.”

“Dark day for Russia,” Mr. Snowden tweeted Thursday.

So basically Putin wants Russia to catch up with the US in that department.

Wait, isn’t Snowden in Moscow?
That seems like a risky thing to say, as he could be expelled from Russia.

Putin is “very bright” and a “strong leader” according to Donald Trump. What could go wrong?

There is no confirmation of Guccifer’s death. May likely be a hoax.

Our laws are nowhere near as bad! We allow encryption and our phone calls aren’t recorded...

Putin doesn’t care about terrorism. If he did, he would stop supporting and arming Iran.

Putin doesn't care about terrorism. If he did, he would stop supporting and arming Iran.

I agree. Iran is a rogue nation that needs to be identified as such, and Russia/Putin is evil covered with a thin veneer to deceive the willing.

I will ask something though - if Putin doesn't care about combating terrorism as evidenced by his support and arming of Iran, does that also mean that the US does not care about combating terrorism as evidenced by its support and arming of Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Pakistan?

I ask because while Iran is the main sponsor of Shia-based terrorism (read: Hezbollah), those three countries I have named are the main sponsors for Sunni-based terrorism (eg Al Qaeda, ISIS, Boko Haram, Al Shabaab, Lakshar e-Taiba, Abu Sayyaf, and many other Sunni-based groups). Sunni Islam terrorist groups far outweigh the Shia Islam groups, and if Putin doesn't give a whit about terrorism through his support of Iran, which supports Shia based groups like Hezbollah, does that mean that the US/Obama/Bush/Clinton etc likewise don't care based of their support of the main countries that support Sunni based groups?

Just a question. Or, maybe, a statement - after all, what's good for the goose is good for the gander. Unless Saudi Arabia's proliferation of Wahhabi/Salafist teachings and money to AQ affiliated groups, Qatar's early financing of ISIS where they'd collect money in bazaars for bullets and weapons (before ISIS finally started capturing cities and oil fields), and Pakistan's decades long support of terrorist groups and the number one proliferator of nuclear weapons, including the North Korean's (that had a British foreign secretary name it the most dangerous country in the world) simply don't fit the agenda and thus do not count.

Let me close by saying something controversial - I fear Shia based groups far less than Sunni based groups. Right now it is a Sunni based group (Al Shabaab) that wants to kill me where I am currently located, and when in the US my fears are directed towards Al Qaeda and ISIS more than they are towards Hezbollah. What about Iran's nuclear weapons? Well, I fear Pakistan's significantly more, especially considering they actually have them (and a considerable number, with most estimates saying a hundred).

Enough controversy - let me just tow the line and focus all my attention on Iran/Hezbollah and continue to ignore (totally) Saudi Arabia/Qatar/Pakistan/Wahhabism/Al Qaeda/ISIS/Boko Haram/ Al Shabaab/Jamiah Islamiya/Abu Sayyaf/Lakshar e-Taiba/ AQ in the Mahgreb/ AQ in the Arabian Peninsula, and another baker's dozen Sunni-based Islamic groups. Yup, Iran is the 'greatest state sponsor of terrorism' as I often hear, and the likes of Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Pakistan - by being 'allies' of the US - are nice little countries that are friendlier than Santa Claus on Christmas Eve. They even offer you warm cookies ever Sunday, and have absolutely nothing to do with terrorism (in fact they hate it so much that Saudi citizens had to be flown out of the US after 911, and I am sure the other Saudis that were on those planes must have been Iranians in disguise).

Or maybe all the countries named - from Iran to Saudi Arabia - are snakes, but people chose to focus on the smaller less lethal serpent (Iran) while totally ignoring great venomous monster-worms in the likes of Saudi Arabia simply because it 'spoils' the agenda. And one more thing - if a WMD ever goes off in the US, which I pray never happens, I can bet money that it will have Pakistani origins (and have nothing to do with Iran). But that doesn't fit the standard narrative either, so ...damn the bloody Iranians! They are the fount of terror.
