When Dallas police used a bomb-carrying robot to kill a sniper, they also kicked off an ethical debate about technologys use as a crime-fighting weapon.
In what appears to be an unprecedented tactic, police rigged a bomb-disposal robot to kill an armed suspect in the fatal shootings of five officers in Dallas. While there doesnt appear to be any hard data on the subject, security experts and law enforcement officials said they couldnt recall another time when police have deployed a robot with lethal intent. If lethally equipped robots can be used in this situation, when else can they be used? says Elizabeth Joh, a University of California at Davis law professor who has followed U.S. law enforcements use of technology. Extreme emergencies shouldn't define the scope of more ordinary situations where police may want to use robots that are capable of harm.

He had fair warning.
There is nothing unethical about this. It was not a drone. It was remote controlled by a human. It was the ethical equivalent of a sniper taking him out.

Hell, I'd pay to see the video!!
Now that he's dead the police are calling him a "lone wolf," i.e. they're conceding that we'll never know.
Look, I'm no expert on this. Not by a long shot. The man definitely deserved death for his crime. But I, too, wonder why they didn't decide to wait him out and nab him.
One theory I heard--- and it makes sense --- is that he claimed he had bombs planted all over the place and he could detonate them. The cops made the decision to take him out as the only sure way to prevent that happening. But that "theory" seemingly has disappeared from the newspaper accounts, so who knows?
In that situation, where he may have planted and scattered bombs, then yes. I’d much prefer using a delivery machine vs send in and sacrifice yet another officer for this guy.
He had foolishly confessed his guilt during the standoff. Saved us money even with the loss of the robot.
Think about it ... prison riots and Robi-derioter sent in to quell the perps!
Please tell us
WHAT IS THE SOURCE OF THESE PHOTOS!
I thought it was remotely operated. If that’s the case, then it’s not a robot. Right?
I see no ethical problem whatsoever. Most of our defense weaponry is robotic.
They’re just mad the perp couldn’t take out more cops before the cops got him.
The men will quit making the robots.
Things are starting to get messy in Baton Rouge. Here’s a link to some live video someone is posting.

“The problem is that they set themselves up as judge, jury and executioner.”
Happens almost everyday for the police. They usually have only a few seconds to run through those levels.
Robot wars....Battle bots!
Sir Killalot, Dead Metal, Matilda, Sergeant Bash
Ben...you are right, but that man needed killing.
Prof. Joh should go back to her original project, looking for seeds in bat guano in Peruvian caves. Much more productive.
What a duffusbag!
No wonder half our lawyers are raving leftist hate-America lunatics.
