Justice ends funding to 'sanctuary cities' in huge House GOP victory
Washington Examiner ^ | 07/07/2016 | PAUL BEDARD

Finally acting on a promise made to House leaders, the Justice Department on Thursday shut off funding to so-called "sanctuary cities" that ignore federal laws and protect illegal immigrants wanted for crimes.

"Today, the DOJ notified local and state law enforcement agencies across America that they will no longer be eligible for federal law enforcement grants unless they certify under oath that their local or state laws do not interfere 'in any way' with requests for immigration information from federal authorities," according to Texas Rep. John Culberson who demanded action earlier this year.

Justice sent Culberson a letter detailing the new rules that cut off several Justice grants, many to law enforcement, if cities like San Francisco, Washington, D.C. and over 300 others block access to criminal illegals sought by federal authorities.

It is a huge victory for Culberson, chairman of the Commerce, Justice, and Science Subcommittee on Appropriations, and others who sought to shut down the once secret system in cities. The practice of taking federal money then refusing to give up criminal illegals became public after the 2015 San Francisco killing of Kate Steinle allegedly by an illegal immigrant who had been deported for crimes several times.

"Sanctuary cities are a hub for illegal aliens and criminal activity, and we've seen the tragic results of these policies time and time again. It has been more than a year since Kate Steinle was murdered at the hands of a criminal illegal alien who intentionally sought out shelter in San Francisco due to the city's sanctuary policies. This violence and suffering is intolerable and completely preventable," said Culberson.

I'm guessing in most places that money is relatively peanuts. How about denying ALL Federal grants?

I had much the same reaction. Still, this is at least a good start.

Exactly. That’s like making the beast sign an NDA. as usual the politicians got it backwards. They should be indicted and made to pay the federal funds back.

https://www.numbersusa.com/news/rep-culberson-pressures-justice-dept-take-action-against-sanctuary-cities

“In a February 2016 letter, Rep. Culberson urged Attorney General Loretta Lynch to take action against cities that protect criminal illegal aliens from deportation. The letter warned her that if she did not pull federal funding for sanctuary cities, he would remove her ability to move money around within the department.

The letter also set out specific actions for the Attorney General to take in order to encourage local authorities to cooperate with federal laws. Lynch has taken those actions, which will prevent any federal or local departments from enacting a formal policy against cooperating with ICE. “

“The Oath of Office means little to most of them so what will this oath mean?”

Especially when they are willing to allow the government to tell them what their oath really means. The Oath is nullified in several different ways so instead of restraining government agents, it becomes a means of forcing them to do something that is tyrannous.

Yeah me too. They’ll take it to court where some lib judge will say....no can do or they’ll figure out something else. Doesn’t matter what the law says anymore. John Roberts, Comey, and and Hillary proved that.

The way I read it, this is not a bill or a law that the senate can stop or obozo can veto but a promise from the D.O.J. to the House. The House controls funding.

For whatever that’s worth.
