why did Comey say only about 3 emails were classified when i found the following? was he trying to cover his backside from the heat of those who took umbrage at his failure to suggest an indictment?

I believe Comey was referring to 3 classified emails among the 30,000 her lawyers wiped clean, not just deleted. That was all they could find among the ones they could still see traces of. He said there were probably more but they would never know because the lawyers did such a thorough job of cleaning the systems.

Agree. Maybe he knew the Dems had a planted question on what % 3 represented as one of the congressman spent time on.
Also, the fact that some of this regardless of marking is so sensitive we will never know what it is.
I think Hurd from Texas does, and in his way let us know it exposed covert assets to life danger. He was one so he would know.
