Tubing nightmare: Women thought river went in circle

MUSKEGON COUNTY, MI – They left for what they thought would be an easy float down Muskegon River Tuesday afternoon – but ended up spending the night on the river bank, scared and yelling for help.

The trio of young women were rescued 20 hours later after a fisherman eventually heard their cries, said Muskegon Township Deputy Fire Chief Bob Grabinski.

The women, all in their 20s, had never been tubing before and decided it would be a fun thing to do, Grabinski said. So they bought some tubes and headed to the popular launch site at the Maple Island Road bridge, Grabinski said.

"They were informed by somebody at the bridge that the river goes in a circle and if they put in there they would come back to their car," he said. "Not knowing anything, they set off on their little adventure."

... If you wrap your hand around an egg perfectly, you can’t crush it.

I saw some depth-stamped CCTV video from a deep research submersible , focused on an egg sitting outside in a collection basket while it descended. It was amazing how long it lasted before it imploded.

It goes in a circle and it’s downstream all the way, so you won’t need to paddle much.

Bet M. C. Escher could make it work. :^) http://www.mcescher.com/gallery/back-in-holland/relativity/

These women are not smart enough to reproduce, but they will anyway.

Because some dumb ass rescued them.

20 hours total after three hours floating?. Heck, if they had just stayed in the tubes for a couple more hours they would have floated into downtown Muskegon and landed there.

I was going to ask “would Laz”, but I opened the link and answered my own question. Product of public education.

The absolute best part of the story... “No one reported the women missing...” Can’t imagine why.

I see your point. Maybe now we know who told 'em the river went in a circle ....

We are all having a laugh at these women’s expense. They had a terrifying night.

While it is human to laugh at other people’s problems, consider that these women likely had never been in a river before. They never were exposed to raw nature before.

They trusted the advice of a stranger. It is hard to get outside of our personal worldview, and the people on freerepublic are several steps above average (yes, that is a frightening thought).

People on freerepublic are smarter, better informed, wiser, more sophisticated, better educated, older and better off than the average, by considerable amounts.

Didn’t we all do some stupid things when we were young?

Maybe not in our 20’s, but in our teens?

There may well be things that these women know about that we do not (such as the best time to visit their local mall, for instance).

I suggest a small amount of empathy to temper the humor of the situation.

How does one live more than 20 years and not learn that water flows downhill?!?!

Government run public schools.

“The river flows in a circle....you’ll come back to where you put in.”

That has to be somewhere near the top of all time snowjobs. And the fact that these ladies BELIEVED IT....! Obunga and Hillary voters, all.

Probably told to them by the guy selling the tubes. He might be advised to watch his back....or relocate, e-vunn.

And the seasons they go round and round
And the painted ponies go up and down
We’re captive on the carousel of time
We can’t return we can only look
Behind from where we came
And go round and round and round
In the circle game

Cut them some slack! Congressman Hank Johnson had lived way longer than that when he posited that too many people on an island could cause it to tip over.

Geesh.

“There may well be things that these women know about that we do not (such as the best time to visit their local mall, for instance).”

The time a store opens has nothing to do with the laws of nature. Water flowing downhill does. If you pour a cup of coffee, the coffee goes DOWN into the cup, not UP into the coffee pot. Most people notice that by the time they are 5...

They shouldn’t have been on the water. Most of them can’t even swim.

.....

Which is the exact reason Lord Baden-Powell started the Boy Scouts.

His experiences in the Boer War showed that city kids didn't know anything about the outdoors. Over a century later and that is still true.
