This is not meant to support Obama but the name of our response does not matter as much as the strategy of our response. We could call it a raspberry smoothie but if we did the right things it would be good, if we called it the Ace Plan to Eliminate Terror and it was bad, it would be worthless.
We are probably one level of engagement short of a true “global war with Islam” and that is to our advantage because fighting such a war would require the same sort of mobilization as the Second World War. We are engaged in a containment exercise aimed at that 20 to 30 per cent of Islam that favors (strongly enough for it to be a problem for us) terror.
How should we proceed? I think it’s self-evident. Identify the sources of the jihadi volunteers as specifically as possible, choose whether the best response is invasion, annihilation, or quarantine, and when these sources are within our own countries, add a level of surveillance and interference most likely to prevent or deter attacks.
No strategy will be perfect. If anyone imagines that we could “nuke the Islamic world” that is both unfeasible and more likely to cause problems than solutions. For example, how do you nuke Islam without showering Israel (and Christian parts of Lebanon) with a lethal dose of radiation? What if any point is there in nuking the Gulf states or Egypt? So that kind of engagement is pointless. A more targeted, specific response is necessary.
But what we call it is not the biggest problem we face. How we do it is.
