CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Sen. Sherrod Brown has joined the call for Gov. John Kasich to suspend Ohio's open carry law during the Republican National Convention this week.
"I would hope that the governor would listen to the police union and suspend conceal and open carry in Ohio, in Cleveland, during this convention," Brown said in an appearance in Cincinnati, as reported by BuzzFeed.
"I know the governor could call a hurried special session, get the legislature to Columbus, like, tonight or tomorrow and do this."
Brown echoed the sentiments of Cleveland police union chief Steve Loomis, who has made his plea to Kasich in numerous TV interviews the last two days.
"It is irresponsible if he doesn't try to help us,'' Loomis told The Plain Dealer on Sunday. "Every single person should demand it. Police are being ambushed and murdered."
Kasich's spokeswoman, Emmalee Kalmbach, said the governor does not have the authority to suspend state and federal laws regarding open carry.
"Ohio governors do not have the power to arbitrarily suspend federal and state constitutional rights or state laws as suggested. The bonds between our communities and police must be reset and rebuilt, as we're doing in Ohio, so our communities and officers can be safe.''
Article 1 of the Ohio Constitution specifically limits the right to suspend laws to the legislature: "No power of suspending laws shall ever be exercised, except by the general assembly."
Well, Sherry, governors are not dicktaters like King Obama.
"... the right of the People to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed."
I'm quite confident that you can understand that, Sherrod.
Why do you want to violate the peoples' constitutionally protected, fundamental right to defense? What sort of trouble are you planning to foment? Hmmm?
Sherrod?
That’s weird. I was thinking gov K-sick should suspend sherrod brown.
I doubt that he has the authority to do it.
The Governor replied that he didn’t have the authority to do so.
YESTERDAY.
No can do.
Governors are not invested with that kind of power you can only wish you had...............
He does not. It is right there in the Ohio constitution.
L
I believe Kasich said yesterday that he doesn’t have the authority to suspend a law passed by the legislature.
Your confidence is misplaced. She understands nothing of the sort. As liberal, laws mean nothing to her. Almost all laws passed by libs are designed to stop other people from doing stuff "for their own good"...........
Sherrod’s just grandstanding for the simple minded again.
Constitutions and laws matter little to DemocRats.
How would keeping people who LEGALLY carry guns keep people who want to kill cops with ILLEGALLY POSSESSED GUNS from doing so ?
OK Sherrod, got it: When the danger is greatest, the need of Democrats to make you defenseless is also greatest.
I would think a lawsuit would hit the court faster they could muster together the legislature for a vote
Is it possible to suspend the incompetent racist sherrod brown?
I watching my best friend’s mother in law, who is a massive Trump supporter, go off on Facebook how Ohio needs to suspend open carry, we need a police state in the country and she is willing to forfeit some freedom for safety. Last week she said Obama’s speeches at the Dallas funerals and over the weekend were classy and presidential.
I’m wondering if she is hitting the bottle a little harder these days.
Sherrod need to get rid of his security detail and put a gun free zone sign on his front lawn.
