Melania Trump’s Speech Bears Striking Similarities to Michelle Obama’s 2008 Address
NY Times ^ | 7/19/2016 | MAGGIE HABERMAN

Mrs. Trump, Monday night:

“From a young age, my parents impressed on me the values that you work hard for what you want in life, that your word is your bond and you do what you say and keep your promise, that you treat people with respect. They taught and showed me values and morals in their daily lives. That is a lesson that I continue to pass along to our son. And we need to pass those lessons on to the many generations to follow. Because we want our children in this nation to know that the only limit to your achievements is the strength of your dreams and your willingness to work for them.”

Mrs. Obama, in her 2008 speech:

“Barack and I were raised with so many of the same values: that you work hard for what you want in life; that your word is your bond and you do what you say you’re going to do; that you treat people with dignity and respect, even if you don’t know them, and even if you don’t agree with them. And Barack and I set out to build lives guided by these values, and pass them on to the next generation. Because we want our children — and all children in this nation — to know that the only limit to the height of your achievements is the reach of your dreams and your willingness to work for them.

Yes, I did see the original comparing articles. But I wouldn’t trust NYT as the verified source of the 0bama speech.

The difference is that no one watched Michele.

Regardless of where her words came from, there is ONLY ONE reason for this whole load of crap: the liberal left, and especially liberal left females, thoroughly despise and cannot tolerate intelligent, successful, classy and beautiful women. That was the only reason behind the undeserved media crucifixion of Sarah Palin.

If it were not this, they would find something else. Hillary cannot possibly stand up to comparison with Melania Trump.

Maybe they both used the same time earlier source and Michelle’s wasn’t original either.

Well, she didn't write the speech...she just explained her aspirations and thoughts to a speech writer.

So take the issue up with her writer.

She was channeling her inner Meechell.

Seriously, it was a beautifully delivered speech.

mooshel has no claim to “your word is your bond”

I will say putting mooshel side by side with melania is a BIG MISTAKE by the effete media.

Last night they old media was so fast with this it is clear it was a journ-o-list operation.

“My wife’s reaction is that it was intentional sabotage.”

Intentional, yes. Sabotage ... No. Lots of people are watching the speech thanks to liberals linking to it over this plagiarism nonsense.

Melania is likable. It’s a mistake for the libs to attack her this way. They’ll learn soon enough :-).

People seem to be getting worked up over any perceived mistake. These aren’t mistakes, sabotage, or gaffes. This is strategy as far as I’m concerned. The fools making the loudest noise wouldn’t vote for Trump. The high level morons in their echo chamber wouldn’t vote for him. The brainwashed parrots in the echo chamber linking to the news/speech wouldn’t vote for him, but the millions that see the parrot’s news ... They *might* vote for him ... And seeing her speech regardless of the plagiarism, helps to kick them in the right direction.

Let’s see if this is news by the end of the day ... I doubt it will be, but millions more will have seen her speech that never would have seen it had it not been for the nonsense this morning :-).

Oh that I wish it were so. Am so sick of the media, Fox News included. Thank goodness the convention was non-interrupted on C-Span. So sick of these phony, lying, spiteful, totally fake talking loonies.

I don’t think the use of a paragraph from another speech is a big deal in and of itself, BUT:

They took MICHELLE OBAMA’S? Seriously? Of all people to crib from? Why were they using her speech as a template at ALL?

And it was STUPID. This ISN’T a college paper. The stupidity bothers me more than the cribbing.

There are some huge differences there.

"Ask now what your country can do for you...ask what you can do for yourself." (Richard Nixon promoting individual effort as opposed to communal endeavors.)

"that your word is your bond and you do what you say and keep your promise (Melania Trump promoting integrity as opposed to Obama's campaign rhetoric)

It is a distraction. Relatively minor issue compared to Hillary’s lying, special treatment, ugly defense of a pedophile, etc. etc.

Under most circumstances, I would agree with you. But not in this regard. I cannot imagine Trump would want this negative publicity as it directly relates to his beautiful wife, who gave a fantastic, beautiful speech, and then to have the news rubes talk of nothing else but the small part that was near identical to a part of Obama’s 2008 speech. Seriously, why would he want that kind of publicity, no to mention the embarrassment of it not only for Melania, but the convention, the campaign, etc. I see no logic in that.

The Roman Empire was destroyed, not from the outside, but from within.

One can easily apply this to the Trump campaign for the presidentcy.

This controversy was engineered from the inside.

Melania should make another speech titled things you would never hear from M. Obama.

Agreed. No responsible speech writer/aide is going to plagiarize a speech like that. Logically, it was intentional.

The MSM is trying to make this the whole narrative for the night.

Don’t pick on our exalted leader, Chairman Obama or his clone.

And the MSM don’t have to bite for it. Sure, cover it, but I see it’s at the top of Google News, and I imagine it’s the talk of all the t.v. news shows this morning.

As if they aren’t many more important things (and as if the actions of one speechwriter are that significant).

They’ve already spent more time on this nothing story from 12 hours ago - and no doubt have gotten all excited about “ethics” - than they spent covering the FBI investigation of Hillary Clinton in the month prior to her non-indictment (which was almost nothing on network news).
