Anti-Trump forces think they can get a candidate next week [Not April Fools]
Washington Examiner ^ | July 19, 2016 | Joel Grehrke

Donald Trump's most persistent opponents from the Right believe that they can recruit a major presidential candidate to run in the fall election, perhaps even within the next several days.

"We believe that it's not only possible but it is plausible that a candidate will emerge, will get on the ballot, and will fight to give Americans a better option, and so we're not giving up," Better for America chief strategist Joel Searby said Tuesday evening before a like-minded crowd in Cleveland.

Predicted statement from Paul Ryan:

“If someone wants to run as an alternative to Trump I’m not going to tell people not to vote for that candidate. They should vote their conscience.” - Paul Ryan

When they look at themselves in the mirror (if there is a reflection!), don’t they realize that they are handing the election to Hillary FOR NO GAIN to their cause? Trump, EVEN if he is as bad as they make him out to be (he is not), will be far more constrained to work with the GOP power structure (their buddies) in Washington.

If they split the vote and we get Hillary, these Anti-Trump zealots will end up with no restraint on Hillary for the worst combination of Obama & Clinton! Three Justices on the Supreme Court will be a nightmare for generations and that is just a stater!!!

“it’s not only possible but it is plausible”

Can someone explain to me the difference between possible and plausible?

The candidate doesn’t need to win. He only needs to siphon off a few percentages from Trump, and that would be their objective.

Exactly how is any new candidate going to siphon votes from Trump?

Promise to build a wall? Promise to deport illegal aliens? Promise to secure our borders? Promise to repeal Obamacare? Promise to Make America Great Again?

As someone who started out as a Cruz Backer and has come to fully realize that Trump is the only candidate to embrace the things most important to the country; what exactly would a new candidate do, say, and/or promise that would pull me and other patriotic voters away from Trump?

I hear Jeb Bush is available.

He might siphon off one tenth of one percent of the vote. :-)

Any Republican officeholder who supports this needs to go down the drain with it.

Every time Paul Ryan hisses the word “conscience” in a sentence, God promptly kills a kitten in furious reprisal. ;)

They really do want Horlary to win. Sad.

This would only steal some votes from Trump...It is too late to add another candidate to the ballot in several states...No chance of them winning, only causing Trump to lose, giving the election to Clinton...

tried and true technique that worked for bubba when he got perot to throw his hat in to the ring as a 3rd party vote skimmer.

That’s because McCain and Romney paid fealty to the conservo-sphere.

How much do you think a writer at NR or The Weekly Standard gets paid? Some writers have broad enough syndication, a string of modestly successful books, and ongoing demand for paid speaking engagements such that they can eke out a living from being a professional conservative.

But even then, it’s just getting by. The big bucks come from consulting, perhaps to Cato, Heritage, or AEI, but the pay is much better with a political campaign. A Presidential campaign typically blows so much money on useless consultants that it feels and looks like a complete clusterf**k to anyone with a modicum of leadership experience.

Trump isn’t playing the game, so the professional conservatives get retribution by sniping that Trump is “antiintellectual”, “not a conservative”, even “fascist”.

I wasn’t originally for Trump. To be perfectly honest I’m still not crazy about him, other than his strong national security stance — which frankly is THE ONLY “single issue” issue that should be on anyone’s mind these days.

But the spectacle of these people continuing to debase themselves and the party they supposedly “love”.... it’s inexplicable. It’s suicidal. I just keep shaking my head and thinking “Did they just SAY that? Did they really DO that?” Just what is it, precisely, that they hate him for so much? OTHER than losing to him. I’m seriously baffled at what is taking place here. They convince me more every day that Trump IS the person I want, because they’re acting like spoiled, entitled little PUNKS! Enough already!!!

It’s becoming pretty obvious much of the #nevertrump crowd is and has been on the Hillary payroll.

These are good points; I think you’re right and with the exception of Victor Davis Hanson and John Fund, there is really no one at the National Review, sadly, who would appear otherwise readable or employable.
