A liberal group is urging Hillary Clinton not to select Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.) as her running mate because of his positions on trade and banking regulation.
"Making Senator Tim Kaine our vice presidential candidate could be potentially disastrous for our efforts to defeat Donald Trump this fall," said Charles Chamberlain, executive director of Democracy for America. The group had endorsed Bernie Sanders during the Democratic primary.
Chamberlain's statement comes as Kaine appears to be the favorite to be Clinton's vice presidential pick. Clinton is expected to announce her running mate on Friday. But Kaine is also sparking concern from liberal groups.
Chamberlain criticized Kaine for voting for fast-track authority for the "job-killing Trans-Pacific Partnership." He also argued that Kaine has participated in a "push for bank deregulation."
Kaine on Monday signed a letter — along with Democratic Sens. Mark Warner (Va.), Gary Peters (Mich.) and Bob Casey (Pa.) — to call for the easing of reporting requirements under a liquidity rule so that they would be less burdensome for regional financial institutions. He also signed a bipartisan letter with 70 signatures that urged the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau to tailor their rules so that they don't hurt community banks and credit unions.
"It should be disqualifying for any potential Democratic vice presidential candidate to be part of a lobbyist-driven effort to help banks dodge consumer protection standards and regulations designed to prevent banks from destroying our economy," Chamberlain said.
Another liberal group, the Progressive Change Campaign Committee (PCCC), also urged Clinton on Thursday to choose a running mate who opposes the Pacific trade deal and supports Wall Street reform.

Booker makes the most sense. Young, dynamic guy. Can sell himself as reasonable and moderate despite his record.
Booker is unmarried. It doesn’t look well on the stage.

Not enough released—and voting—felons in Virginia?
Kaine is the only one that passed the vetting process. Most of the others have committed felonies awaiting prosecution by Chris Christie in 2017.
No Bench to speak of. No one to set up for 2020 if she loses. Bill Richardson has the experience but I don’t know.
She could select a Campbell’s soup can and not lose any of her votes.
