Ali's family were Shia Muslim from Iran:

per The Telegraph:

Ali Sonboly's hairdresser described him as a "typical teen" who was "quiet, didn't talk much" and who "wasn't religious".

He said he didn't believe the attack could have been an Isil-inspired Paris-style terror attack, because the family were Shia Muslims.

"They're Shias," the hairdresser, who gave his name only as Hakan, said."How could he be with Isil? Isil hate the Shia."

Except, of course, that Iran is the world's largest state sponsor of terrorism, including massive support for Sunni terror, to include Hezbollah and Hamas.

The MSM is on the threshold of the truth here.

Good connection there.Iran state sponsor of terrorism against Israel particularly. And this occurred in Munich the same place where the Pali terror group Black September took 11 Israeli hostages and killed them. Only thing missing is the date but when you’re a Muslim terrorist sometimes you can’t help yourself.

What mosque was he going to?

There are lots of extremist Sunni mosques in Germany (and throughout the West), but Shia mosques are harder to find. Several Western jihadis came from Christian, or Jewish families.

The family moved to the area two years ago - plenty of time for a teenager to fall in with a bad crowd. and be radicalized.

Second generation immigrants seem to be a better source of recruitment for the jihadis. They tend to be more the right age - awkward teens, and twenty-somethings searching for meaning.
