How to use “parental lock” to prevent your parents from tuning in to cable news.

Cable news is bad. Fox News is the worst. It is, after all, the network that blamed a hoodie for the death of Trayvon Martin and claimed that poor people have it pretty good if they’ve got a refrigerator. We’d all probably be better off if we shut off Sean Hannity and Megyn Kelly and watched sports or nature documentaries or talked to our families. This does not have to be a hypothetical. We have the technology in our very own homes to make this dream a reality.

Abby, a Slate reader, watched her mother—who’d lived in the United States as a permanent resident for nearly 30 years—become a U.S. citizen to vote for Hillary Clinton in the 2008 Democratic primary. She was quite surprised, then, to find her mother becoming an increasingly attentive Fox News viewer. Abby felt she had no choice: The child unleashed the power of parental lock on her own mother.

After Abby’s mother called her cable operator to ask why the channel wasn’t working, Abby revealed that she had blocked it. The mother and daughter then had the opportunity to “have a conversation about whether it was a good news source or not.”

“This girl is censoring her own mother’s ability to watch the TV channel of her choice???? Really????”

Catherine Piner, just another Capo for Communism!

Libs love censorship and the closing of the mind. They are the ultimates when it comes to tyranny, all the while telling you how much they are into tolerance and freedom.

This is the typical liberal/Democrat/leftist response to things they disagree with — censor it. They do not have the brains to be able to argue their positions with anyone who has facts. Once you get below their talking points, they are lost or resort to “well everyone does it” or some other trite phrase.

As people lose their executive functioning (any kind of mild cognitive decline but especially dementia), it is amazing how they take their thoughts from their TV shows.

My mother was a principled conservative who revered our Constitution, freedom, an excellent student of American history. Once she started down the path of Alzheimer’s, she started gluing herself to Fox News. She became enamoured of whomever they were pushing. Like loving Paul Ryan. Etc. She has a memory of about 30 seconds now but still knows from Fox News that “Trump is bad” and I have to re-remind her what he really is fighting and standing for. Don’t worry, she will not be voting.

We have to put on other shows for her so she can enjoy her day. Too much news all the time is too depressing for her. It is perfectly ok to direct impaired seniors’ viewing habits. She is happy and content watching funny shows. She worries when she perseverates on news, like fires and terror attacks. So we let her watch for 30-60 mins and then it has to be other, more enjoyable shows (sports, movies, sitcoms).

Now, if they are fully competent, it would be nasty to take away your parents’ favorite channels. But the point of the article should be well understood: people with lower executive functioning are too easily swayed and need protection from overzealous tv bias. On EITHER side.

Well of course. She has been assured of that in the government schools! She is a precious snowflake and is highly valued just because she’s on the planet, and all is owed to her!
