The good news for Trump is that he is not perceived as a typical Republican. Because Trump was shunned by a lot of establishment GOP, many Democrats feel they can vote for him without feeling like a traitor to their party.

Had the GOP convention been truly unified, and the likes of Mitt Romney, George W. Bush and Ted Cruz fully endorsed him, I'm thinking that would have done Trump more harm than good among those who usually vote Democrat.
