New Bedford leaders are livid at Hillary Clintons depiction of the Whaling City as a place where handicapped children were abandoned at home because the schools lacked accommodations for youngsters with special needs.
Its not true, former Mayor Jack Markey told the Herald yesterday. Im even a Democrat, but the truth is the truth.
We would take handicapped kids in a small van to schools that could take them, said Markey, who served on a local board that helped disabled children before he was elected mayor in 1971. I would have been aware of a child needing help to go to school. The truth is we had access.
Clinton, in her speech accepting the Democratic Partys nomination for president Thursday night, recalled working for the Childrens Defense Fund in New Bedford in 1973, looking into why 2 million kids were reported as not going to school nationwide.
I remember meeting a young girl in a wheelchair on the small back porch of her house, Clinton said. She told me how badly she wanted to go to school it just didnt seem possible in those days.
Campaign spokesman Josh Schwerin said last night Clinton went door-to-door in a New Bedford neighborhood with a large Portuguese and Cape Verdean population and found disabled school-age children who felt that it was impossible for them to attend school.
But the story has shocked numerous New Bedford officials who ran the city and school
system then.

What??? Do you meant to say Hillary lied or exaggerated what really happened there???/ I’m shocked, just shocked.
You mean to tell me Hillary lied? SHOCKING!
At least she didn’t say she took sniper fire while she went door to door in the neighborhood.
Trying to get my head around that one...
Maybe she has her stories confused, and New Bedford is where she came under sniper fire, and the handicapped children in Bosnia were the ones unable to attend school. That must be it. Hillary would never lie, she just forgets the facts, and names and places of where events actually happened. (Do I need a sarcasm tag?)
The travesty of public education is its inability to provide special programs for special needs children, like autistic little ones. The refusal of local Bds of Education to release these children to receive much needed services from the private sector results in many of them becoming permanently broken.
It’s all about money. Private education not only provides a higher quality of service it also reduces the coffers of the gov education industry. Many special needs children are cursed by public education. Often they are literally strapped to a chair for years by public school officials who have no understanding of the damage they are causing.
When did she cobble that little lie together? If it was during her acceptance speech, she probably doesn’t even remember saying it, being so distracted by Bill Clinton’s public snoozing on her special day.
Nothing to see here... she simply misspoke. /s
Lying BITCH!
Good! Glad to hear her being called out. Won’t hear about it on TV though.
Hillary is sorry you misunderstood her intent when speaking of your town. She can’t remember what happened last week much less what happened in 1973. That was back when she couldn’t pass the DC Bar exam.
DNC media won’t say a word about this or anything else..they will protect this POS til election day
From the article...
Campaign spokesman Josh Schwerin said last night Clinton went door-to-door in a New Bedford neighborhood with a large Portuguese and Cape Verdean population and found disabled school-age children who felt that it was impossible for them to attend school. But the story has shocked numerous New Bedford officials who ran the city and school system then.
Joseph Silva, a retired superintendent of New Bedford Schools and principal of Ingraham Elementary School when the Childrens Defense Fund investigators combed through the city in 1973, said Kids werent left to flounder. Thats been historically the culture in New Bedford that the needs that children
had were met in whatever ways necessary.
In Chandler, Arizona, not only does the school district provide for handicapped children, they insist the teachers instruct the children -- children who are so severely afflicted they can't master tying their shoelaces -- in arithmetic.
The fact is there are federal dollars attached to handicapped kids.
but Hilliary, not so much.
Haha
is that from Dragonball Z?
No, those animated gifs were just found doing a random search, feel free to use them if you wish! ;)
My son with Down Syndrome just learned how to tie his shoes at almost 13, should he not have been taught anything?
How on earth did you derive that from my post? Nobody is saying children with Down Syndrome should be denied an appropriate education. I think perhaps you are understandably sensitive and therefore overly defensive. I merely related the ridiculous SPED overkill in the Chandler School District.
Let's leave personal feelings out of this for a moment and use logic. Is it reasonable to insist that lessons in arithmetic be given to a child who
1.) Has SEVERE Down Syndrome (intelligence level of a 2-year-old)
2.) Is completely blind
3.) Experiences many, many seizures during the course of a day.
4.) Is incontinent, therefore requiring the teacher to take time out from teaching the class for toilet duties.
Wouldn't that child be better served with help in the home so children who can benefit from an educational experience in a school setting (such as your son) can receive more of the teachers' time and attention?
