The great fantasy author David Eddings had a character give a great reply to this sort of thing:
***
“You’ve enslaved us!” someone bellowed.
“Not me, old boy,” Stragen
drawled. “You couldn’t *give* me a slave. You have to feed them, you know, even when they’re not working.”
***
On a related note, perhaps we *should* pay reparations for slavery to those who can prove they were descended from slaves. However, in order to get the payment, they would need to leave the US forever and return to Africa with their money. Neither they nor any other member of that family could ever return - we wouldn’t want them filing duplicate claims, after all.
Might be cheaper than welfare, taxpayer-footed hospital bills and all the shootings we’re getting now from the same people.
Thanks for the David Eddings reminder.
Great author and a truly unappreciated series. Never did reach the acclaim he deserved, IMHO.
My idea of reparations is the original one: forty acres and a mule. Take away all food stamps, welfare, obamafones, etc., and give each black family 40 acres and a mule and tell them to support themselves.
