Let’s hope the SS United States has a better future than its rival in the 1950s and 1960s, the RMS Queen Mary. The ship has been a financial disaster since 1967 and no hope of getting better.

At least it still exists. The RMS Queen Elizabeth, SS France, and countless others are long gone. Another poster stated it precisely. Saving these old ships just isn’t practical. That being said, if the City of Long Beach had cooperated with Disney, there would be a huge theme park there and plenty of money today.

I worked on the ship for a short time during college. I believe a sure fire way to make the ship viable would be to expand the adjacent shopping area and add a casino. There would be plenty of traffic coming in with that draw to carry the load.

That is my thought. The ship has never been a viable reality. The only thing it has going for it is it’s name.

We don’t salvage 60’s autos for anything but show. Why try to salvage a ship?
