This is pretty funny while it is pretty scary - this is just another selectively enforced law that will be only enforced when it is convenient for the officer to nail you. This goes along with the enforcement of using cell phone usage - very rarely enforced. Using turn signals is also in this group.
I recently saw two women drivers, each driving an SUV with a value of at least $70,000, get into a fender-bender in an upscale, chic part of town.
They got out of their vehicles and got into one of the most foul-mouthed blue-streak swearing bird-flipping brawls I have ever witnessed in my lifetime.
This would have been bad if it had happened in the ‘hood at bar closing time. And this was five o’clock in the afternoon in a well-to-do upscale suburb.
I got the bird one time from a woman. I was in the left lane, she was stuck behind a slow moving garbage truck. I dimmed my headlights to allow her to get around the truck. She passed the truck and gave me a single digit wave. So much for road courtesy.

It’s really nobody’s business what somebody else does in the privacy of their own vehicle. Except for a cop, if they are breaking a law. And they can’t claim someone was “distracted” because that is on a case by case basis. Some people are able to drive with skill and caution while multi-tasking and others can’t handle even tuning a radio without becoming momentarily out of tune with their surroundings. I’v been driving for over 20 years, never got a ticket, only one accident at 17 and I eat, drink, read and ride my bike frequently while cruising the highway.
I was 18 years old heading to my summer job. I pulled into CoGo’s (the Western PA equivalent of WaWa) to buy a cup of coffee. I got in my car and started driving. Steering with the right hand, coffee in my left. I came to a stop sign and had to make a left turn. I plunked the bottom of my cup down on the turn signal lever, which went THROUGH the bottom of the cup, causing 18 ounces of scalding hot coffee to run down my leg.
Very fortunate in hindsight that I did not lose control of the vehicle and hit somebody.
No shock anymore. The gals around here drive just as crazy (except without the skills), curse just as much, and drink and drug just as much as the guys.
But hey, they’re feminists so it’s ok.
They later become great mothers /s
That’s pure BS..
The drivers in question are a danger to me
to hell with ‘em
This bill is designed to increase donations to various legislators so they will vote it down. So it will never pass
Ouch that sounds like it would be quite painful. I do agree that one should not be holding a cup of hot coffee with maneuvering around turns and parking etc. but if just cruising normally and picking up thermos from holder for a sip now and then there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that.
“...I eat, drink, read and ride my bike frequently while cruising the highway.”
You ride your bike while driving your car?
You’re good!
And I thought I had driving with my knees down to an art form (in the proper 8 o’clock and 4 o’clock position, of course).
Girl going 90 MPH passes me putting on make up and talking on cell phone. Driving with her knees.
I see a lot of people reading while driving.
If that was so, I couldn't stand at the sink and brush my teeth at the same time.
Now imagine while I was brushing my teeth, the phone rang and the baby started crying.
OMG!! How do I process 4 things at a time??
How about driving and picking your nose....which takes a lot of concentration.
Bet this has less to do with driver distraction and much more to do with more ‘revenue’ for NJ.
Please don’t do that, Mr Zimmerman...
“Bet this has less to do with driver distraction and much more to do with more revenue for NJ.”
Bingo. This is nothing more than an income generating bill to squeeze the citizens of New Jersey out of more of their hard earned cash to pay for their bloated and in debt State government.
Stupid.
Most (if not all) states already have statutes that make “distracted” driving a penalized activity. Thus, things like eating, drinking, cell phones or anything that detracts from proper attention to driving are already liable for tickets.
The police just don’t usually do anything unless it looks really bad or is obviously affecting the driving. IMO, a lot of what I see should get a pullover and a ticket. Another layer of laws will not fix that.
Agreed. The insanity I see on the roads where I am bears a few common threads.
- Female driver
- SUV with an MSRP of at least $70K
- Driver zipping around in large SUV like it was a Toyota Corolla
- Driver’s head turned at a 90 degree angle away from the direction of travel of the vehicle
- Driver distracted by yakking on a cell phone/stuffing her face/applying makeup, etc.
Sorry to all you gals out there, but honestly that’s the gauntlet I run on my way home every day.
It seems that not a single month passes by when I do not thank God that I left New Jersey to come to Texas 15/2 years ago. NJ politicians can’t seem to restrain themselves in their efforts to the rights and simple dignity of the average citizen. Yesterday, I went to a gun show...which is impossible to do in NJ because you cannot buy a handgun without a pre-approved permit from your local PD. Many larger cities won’t approve them or, if they do, will delay for months beyond the state law mandated 30 days.
