My view: Turning free men into defenseless victims.
Turning US progressives into expats.
Gardens vs guns, huh? I already know how that turns out.
Years ago when I was living in a diverse, crime ridden, violent inner city, a group of us decided to clean up a weedy lot and turn it into a “community garden.”
A positive endeavor for grownups, a learning experience for the children.
The rule, though, was that you reap what you sow. This was not free stuff for everybody. Only those who worked in the garden would be allowed to share the bounty.
We set about recruiting participants. We got 6 adult enthusiasts and their children, for a total of 11.
Mostly, though, we got comments like, “I gots food. Why I need to do dat?” “My peoples done done enough workin’ the fields. Ima relax.” and “Get off my porch. I ain’t your damn field n——a.”
So the participants fenced and tilled and watered, and the garden grew.
And the non-participants climbed and cut the fence and were seen running down the streets with arm loads of purloined produce, so often that it became necessary to post a guy with a gun to guard the garden.
