Bus full of Chinese basketball reporters caught in roadside gunfight on the way to Olympic Village

The 2016 Summer Olympics are scheduled to begin today, but for some it has already begun with a bang.

Upon their arrival in Rio, a bus full of Chinese basketball reporters was caught in a roadside gunfight. Six locals were killed in the exchange, but no Chinese casualties have been reported.

Initially, the Chinese-language Basketball Magazine posted on Weibo that Chinese national basketball team players had been caught near the flurry of bullets, where they would have presumably suffered from flashbacks to their two exhibition matches against Team USA last month.

However, Basketball Magazine later corrected this report. Upon arriving at the Rio airport, players and reporters boarded different buses headed for the Olympic Village. The bus full of basketball players made it there without incident, while the one full of reporters got held up about 2km away from the airport.

The magazine has posted some photos of the shoot-out on Weibo: (photos as source article)

I could not care less about the Olympics ... but this Brazil seems to be a major problem.

Kind of unfair that the “urban” side of Rio is featured more so than in any other New World city. In 1996, beside the bombing, were there reports of such urban violence in Atlanta Olympics? What about 1984 Los Angeles olympics? Was violence in Compton mentioned?

Don’t get me wrong. I would not want to go to Rio for any reason. But they do have street cleanup squads that are doing their best to keep the trash off.

The thing about murdering an entire troupe of Chinese basketball players is that an hour later your ready to murder an entire troupe of Chinese basketball players all over again.

The first time I read this over the weekend, it said players and I had a bit of concern. If it was journalists, should I be?

Unfair? No, the coverage is pretty accurate.

You seem to equate the extent of criminality in Brazil with that of the US. Clearly, you have no idea of the reality.

Settle down. I did not say “the US”, just the cities that had their olympics here... like Los Angeles and Atlanta. Heck, throw in Chicago (future US olympics venue) and it is probably MORE violent than Rio.

So you want to double-down? OK I have no prob taking from novices.

You have no idea what you are talking about. Some of the nicest places in Sao Paoulo, Rio, Belo Horizonte, and Brazilia make Straight Outta Compton feel like Driving Miss Daisy.

But dont stop now - your'e doing real good!
