Sowell: Old Lies
Creators Syndicate ^ | August 9, 2016 | Thomas Sowell

Posted on 08/08/2016 11:54:41 AM PDT by jazusamo

We expect to hear a lot of lies during an election year, and this year is certainly no exception. What is surprising is how old some of these lies are, and how often they have been shown to be lies, years ago or even decades ago.

One of the oldest of these lies is that women are paid less than men for doing the same work. Like many other politically successful lies, it contains just enough of the truth to fool the gullible.

Women as a group do get paid less than men as a group. But not for doing the same work. Women average fewer annual hours of work than men. They work continuously for fewer years than men, since only women get pregnant, and most women are not prepared to instantly dump the baby on somebody else to raise.

Being a mother is not an incidental sideline, and being a single mother can be a major restriction on how much time can be put into a job, either in a year or over the years.

People like Hillary Clinton can simply grab a statistic about male-female income differences and run with it, since her purpose is not truth but votes. The real question however is whether, or to what extent, those income differences are due to employers paying women and men different wages for doing the very same jobs, for the very same amount of time.

Is Dr. Sowell welcome around here again? It’s so hard to keep up these days. I know he was regarded as extremely stupid, sellout, GOP Establishment, or some such nonsense during the primary season.

I love the guys who say he’s the smartest man in the world, and the greatest economist, but he’s wrong on free trade.

I heard him speak about the American black community and the thug sub-culture in the American black community on television. It was about a book he wrote. I think he is a wise man. I do not know if he was banned from Free Republic. The thing is, do we want to become like the democrats, where we won’t even listen to an opposing viewpoint? There are lots of people here who started out dupporting other candidates and now support Trump.

He’s trying to redeem himself after participating in the scurrilious NR attacks against Trump. I love the man, but it’s going to take awhile for me to forget.

Didn’t Ron Reagan say something such as:

“A person with who I agree with 80% of the time doesn’t mean that he’s 20% my enemy”

???

Thomas is always a good read. He turned 86 this past June 30th. I believe it is OK for him to have a mind of his own. If we disagree, which is rarely, but happens, so be it. He’s still, and always will be one of the favorites in memory for me.

Well said, my FRiend. For whatever reason he’s got a hangup with Donald Trump, I don’t agree with him but that doesn’t mean he’s not a brilliant man.

I agree. He is brilliant and I love his articles.

86! Wow. That is amazing. I hope I’m that on top of things when I get to be that age, if I am lucky enough to do so.

Of course the way ‘they’ solve it is to give MEN ‘maternity’ leave. It really rankles my jib to hear that a PRO Athlete is on ‘maternity leave’.
Of Course when my kids were born they still had visiting hours, you could go to the room AFTER the Drs were through and they had a waiting room for expectant fathers.
I NEVER spent time in a waiting room, and never ‘bought’ the movie/TV scene of pacing in the WR for hours.

I have always contended that as an entrepreneur I and my colleagues must have been stupid if we continued to hire what we thought was the best person for the job even down to personality and compatibility so if we hired WHITE males for the job we had to be stupid for not hiring women and minorities and putting the supposed .25 to 1 buck per hour difference in our pocket.

Everytime the standards get lowered to accommodate ‘others’, the quality of the applicants goes down as a result and it eventually weakens the position.

It may take a generation or two but remember it wasn’t all that long ago that in order to be a State Trooper you had to be over 6’ and have corresponding weight and you could look at the majority of troopers and police/fire fighters and just ‘respect’ them for the way they looked in uniform.

Nowadays the height and weight are optional and we end up with a bunch of Clint Eastwood ‘subjects’ wearing the uniform of the Military and LEO/Fire Fighters.

I can’t stand the “pay gap” myth. So ridiculous. That Bud light commercial with Chuck Schumer’s unfunny cousin and that d-bag Seth Rogen makes me wanna hurl a brick.

“I love the guys who say he’s the smartest man in the world, and the greatest economist, but he’s wrong on free trade.”

He’s right on free trade.

However, what we have had isn’t free trade. It’s a “heads we lose, tails you win” sort of national masochism.

Other countries, notably Japan, have brought the whole wealth and power of their nations to bear on single US industries, which they destroyed. We prosecute people for far less.

Well, if the Japs are making things cheaper and or better, I have no problem buying those things. If their products are not competitive, then no amount of wealth and power will help said products.

“Well, if the Japs are making things cheaper and or better, I have no problem buying those things.”

You should.

“If their products are not competitive, then no amount of wealth and power will help said products.”

Ever hear of “dumping?”

One Japanese industry after another destroyed its American “competitors” by taking market share. They did this not by making things cheaper or better, but by dumping products in our markets **below cost**.

How did they sell below cost? Government subsidies and overcharging at home.

Do you have a problem with a foreign power setting out to destroy our industries through government subsidies of their own industries? Do you expect our industries to compete with foreign companies selling **below cost**?

What would you think if you heard that Chevrolet and Ford were getting government subsidies to allow them to sell below cost in England for the purpose of destroying the English automobile industry?

On a related subject, have you heard that some of our enemies are getting ready to deploy ICBMs on submarines? They are only able to do that because Rotten Cankles’ faux husband gave Toshiba access to the quiet propellers we use on our subs. Toshiba promptly gave this technology to the Russians, who gave it...
