Free traders ought to tell the truth? Ok let’s play this out then shall we? Ok let’s say I’m king and I want to say hmmmm let’s penalize cotton. Ya that’s right cotton tarrifs on all.

Cost to import goes up to manufacturer who thereby passes it to the shipper who in turn passes it to the business abroad who in turn passes it to truck business where that money goes into the government coffers. Who in the end absorbs that cost? Yup you got it....the consumer!!! Oh and by the way I used just simple cotton which then propagates cost across hundreds of thousands of products.

Where do jobs get lost? The ones large enough to sustain a loss in consumer base for their product. Let’s say 100 companies only use that cotton and 20 are able to weather the loss in revenue. That’s 80 that go belly up along with their supply chains, those to Truck drivers yada yada yada....But hey I’m just one of those evil free traders

This is the law George Washington signed. The counties first law.

"Whereas it is necessary for that support of government, for the discharge of the debts of the United States, and the encouragement and protection of manufactures, that duties be laid on goods, wares and merchandise:"[1]

Go ahead call George a socialist. Go ahead.
