My guess is that they can be wildly inaccurate now to be used to influence the electorate. In the last week or 2 before the election they will start to 'move' so that they actually reflect the real polling results so they can maintain their credibility. There are dozens - maybe hundreds of polling firms. You think they're all in on this? If you were a private polling company, wouldn't you have every incentive to spill the beans so that your competition would be discredited and you could take home all the business?

At this point I trust nothing that is reported publicly by anyone. I think both campaigns have private polling that they pay for that is very accurate and they won’t reveal what those results are.
