As for breaking up companies: most were ready to crumble. What Icahn did was find value hidden in the trash. Decades ago, conglomerations were the big business fad. Vertical or horizontal integration was supposed to lead to synergies and economies. Often, things didn’t work out that way. The parts worked better than the whole; so companies were broken apart to save the best parts of them.
