Dirk Van Tichelt probably didnt envision one of the greatest days of his life ending in the hospital. But thats exactly where the Belgian judoka found himself Monday night hours after winning his first-ever Olympic medal.
*snip*
Van Tichelt was reportedly assaulted by a thief on the famous beach, and was struck in the face. He was taken to the hospital after the incident.

This is not a chawade.
This isn’t the first story about tourists, officials, media, etc. getting attacked, robbed or beaten while in Rio. The sad part is that these attacks weren’t even happening in the bad parts of Rio. They were happening in the supposedly safe or decent areas of Rio.
LOL. I had to think about that for a second. To get your mind off of it, here's my advice: Go dahntahn an git yinzesself a Primanti's sammitch.
:)
He say, legit, about the scar — ‘blame it on Rio.’
As someone who has taken several of the fighting styles here are the most effective.
Philippine Karate, Muay Thai, Jui Jitsu, Gung Fu, Boxing in that order.
Judo doesn’t teach defending against kicks and punches.
Boxing doesn’t use the feet, elbows and knees as weapons
it follows rules the street has no place for rules.
Weapons like Kali sticks, expandable batons must be carried all the time. Only a knife is practical to carry all the time. I like the Emerson Combat Karambit, it opens as you draw it from your pocket, has a ring that prevents it falling out of your hand.
The official “Martial Arts” are overrated. Mixed arts are better, but better than that is simply Street Fighting.
Have a close friend that trained in Judo at the OTC in Co Springs for years. Invite only to be able to train there. He was well trained in aikido, jiu jitsu, sombo and judo. Judo just happens to be what the Olympic sport is but I would guess that this guy was well trained in many disciplines as well and probably just got caught off guard. You square these 2 guys off, give the perp a knife or a stick and I’ll put money on the Olympic judo guy 10 out of 10 times assuming perp is just an untrained hack that has to sucker people to get the drop on em.
Remember 9/11, flight 93, Jeremy Glick (and others) took on the a-holes with the box cutters? Glick was WELL trained and they stopped that plane from hitting its target. Glick was a national champ in judo.
Cowardly thieves don’t fight head on. They hit you with a brick in the back of the head, grab your stuff, and run.

My martial arts instructor had three rules:
Do it first.
Do it hardest.
Do it dirtiest.
Or you quickly realize judo is a sport and not an effective means of self defense.

Negative. If you’re going to learn something useful, you may as well so it right.
If I remember reading right Jack Dempsey in his 50s or maybe it was his 60s dropped two would be muggers in NYC
It takes only one good people nch to make somene forget all they know.
One good punch...
He needs to give back his medal.
Some fool tried to mug my 44 year old daughter (36 years of martial arts lessons) and her instructor. It didn’t go well for the mugger. They told him that he could get his wallet and gun back at the local precinct where they were turning them in.
What about the sport that starts with a “k” ?
Got it, Karate.
“What about the sport that starts with a k ?”
Knife-throwing is pretty high up in the totem pole.
If, however, you mean flashy sports like Karate or KungFu, then they are practically useless against street fighters. Okay, they are a bit better than Boxing.
