Good question, but what other options were there, really. And the truth of the matter is that Trump’s philosophy is very in tune with the Republican base, just not the party bigwigs.
I view this as a shareholder revolt on behalf of the base being lead by Trump so that just perhaps, we may once again have at least one party that gives a damn about the country.

Rodent wrangler Romney and other turncoat Republicans, if successful, will destroy the GOP.
The corollary to “opposing Trump” is supporting Clinton.
A party that will not support its own candidate cannot survive.
It necessarily follows that one of two things will happen in 2017: Trump will win and purge the GOP from top to bottom, or the Romney RATs and their GOP will succeed in their goal of electing the nominee of the other party and the GOP will be replaced by a new party that represents those who support it.
On the upside, if Trump wins, the GOPe is dead.
On the upside, if Trump loses, the GOPe is dead.

Romney put his dog in a crate on top of his SUV for a long holiday drive. It scared the shit out of the dog. The family laughed when they saw the shit run down the windows. I’m not feeling a whole lot of empathy in the Romneys. I’m not seeing much common sense in Romney in presidential politics. Still he was a better choice than “show me my tattoo” O’Brien in the gubernatorial election for the Massachusetts governorship.
Romney has no idea what Republicans didn’t go out in big numbers and vote him in.
