Our present conflict is not regional, as the "late unpleasantness" of the 1860s was. It is, as you say, ideological. It is also urban vs. suburban/rural. No State (even California or New York) is pure 'gibsmedat'; no State (even Texas or West Virginia) is pure "maker".

Secession? Who and what secedes? I'm not sure what I would have been in 1860 (quite possibly a Confederate), but I'm pretty sure I'm a Unionist today.

“Secession? Who and what secedes?”

Texas is definitely on the list. There are others too.

But given human nature, things have to get significantly more dire before any concrete steps take place. We will continue to appease, tolerate, give in for a long time to come. Who knows, perhaps forever.

The most likely scenario is each one of us individually will “separate” or secede ourselves from whatever we don’t like and relocate to a place we like, which, I guess is the way things have been for a while - part of freedom of association. Though Obama is trying to squelch this as well, by dictating where people must live and what neighbors they must have.

We are like the proverbial frog in the pot.
