One would hope that any briefing would be the same for candidates and President. If the President even bothers to receive such a briefing.

They are not the same. The president gets the "crown jewels" of the intelligence community. The candidates get selected information, as well as answers to questions they ask. The Q&A is shared with the opposition candidate. CNN reported that Carter submitted a list of some 24 questions or issues he wanted to be briefed on. I think Trump will be an active participant too.
