What this statement shows is that it was always insanely evil for the USA to support "opposition" to overthrow the Assad govt in Syria. There is no way in hell we ever should have wanted to help (a) Salafists, (b) Muslim Brotherhood, and/or (c) AQI forces come to power in Syria. NO WAY IN HELL.
ofc, as we know, ISIS arose out of this witches' cauldron of jihadist hell.

I believe that you identified the crux of the scandal. They knew that by supporting the insurgency they were supporting the Salifists, the Muslim Brotherhood, and Al Qaeda in Iraq. One can only wonder how much this point is brought out further in the substantial redacted portions of the email.
