They filmed the movie Stripes there.
I had a chance for a speaking part in the movie.
I asked my Commander for permission to be in the movie.
I’ll never forget his response.
“You can either be an Army Officer or you can be an actor. You can’t be both. And frankly, with a face like yours, I think you have a better chance in the Army.”

Speaking of gold, here is the crown of Stephen I, the first king of Hungary. This crown, and the golden orb and scepter made to go with it, have belonged to every Hungarian king over the past millennium, up to Karl I, the last Hapsburg monarch. It was at Fort Knox for more than thirty years. Here's why:
In the fall of 1944, when Soviet troops first entered Hungary, Hungarian nationalists took the crown jewels from their usual storage place, to prevent them falling into the hands of the Red Army. Then in early 1945, the jewels were smuggled to Austria, and hidden in a monastery near Salzburg, where they were shown to American soldiers on May 3. After that, because of the Cold War, these treasures were kept in Fort Knox, Kentucky; Hungary didn't know it because their location was a military secret until the 1970s. Finally in January 1978, US President Jimmy Carter sent them back, as a goodwill gesture and to reward the Hungarian government for lifting many communist-era restrictions.
