Deaf man shot dead by police 'while using sign language'

Police allegedly shot dead a deaf man outside his front door as he tried to communicate with them in sign language.

Officers in North Carolina had attempted to pull over 29-year-old Daniel Harris last Thursday for speeding, according to NBC.

But instead of slowing down, Mr Harris continued on his way home.

One witness reported Mr Harris was then shot and killed "almost immediately" after exiting his vehicle".

The witness said it appeared the victim had attempted to communicate with an officer via sign language when he was fired on outside of his home.

We have to start realizing that SOME of these incidents are NOT the fault of the dead person.

...

It’s possible, but in the vast majority of these cases the officer is exonerated at trial, if there is one, and sometimes by Obama’s DOJ.

Why is it legal for a deaf person to get a license?

...

Deaf people lobbied for it and claim they are just as safe as people who can hear. Some use devices that alert them to sirens. The bottom line is being deaf isn’t an excuse for not stopping.

You should never get out of the car when you’re pulled over. And he didn’t stop? That’s crazy.

I doubt very seriously the police caught him speeding in the block before his home.

I find that I need to know where the cars are around me, and I try to keep a good idea of what’s going on around me. I don’t look in my rear view all the time, but I do check it not infrequently. I generally know where the cars are around me on my side of the street. If something happens, I have an idea of where I can go to avoid someone, how much space I’ll have.

It’s not this person’s fault not to have done this. None the less, what is an officer to think.

Hey, I followed him for a quarter of a mile.
I had my siren on for over an eighth of a mile.
He ignored me.
I took that to mean he was intentionally fleeing.
He pulled into his driveway.
I didn’t know what to expect.
I exited the vehicle with my weapon in my hand.
He open the door wheeled around and faced me while raising his hand from the hidden side of his body, and seemed to be leveling it in my direction with movement.
It appeared to me he was manipulating an object and I fired.

No I don’t think it was the driver’s fault, but he could have done some things different to avoid this

Is it the officer’s fault? Maybe so. I don’t think so. You touched on a major problem, and that is that this is now open season on cops due to the BLM fiasco. They have to be ready at a moment’s notice.

This is a tough time right now. It will probably get worse until Trump gets in there and can turn things around.

It is my understanding if deaf, there is a device that goes on the dash that will flash if there is an emergency vehicle behind you. If someone deaf refuses to invest in it, they shouldn’t drive. No excuse! What if this was a fire engine or paramedic trying to save someone’s life. Secondly, There is a certain way to act when being pulled over. Stop the vehicle in a safe area, hands on steering wheel. Not - continue driving, exit vehicle arms flailing. These officers didn’t know if they were dealing with someone deaf, drugged, crazy.

Obviously common sense has gone right out the window when dealing with law enforcement.

Come charging out of your car with your hands waving after having been pursued while refusing to pull over and bad things are going to happen.

Where did you read that he had resisted arrest previously? And "Charging out of your car?" When does exiting your car become charging out of your car? When a policeman shoots you, it seems.
I'm not proclaiming the deaf guy totally innocent, but to assume guilt is a bit much too.
I'm waiting till video or more of the story comes out before declaring the cop guiltless on this when a human life was taken.

Trump will win if his supporters all get out and vote for him and send him a check. I have sent several and will send more.

AND, vote IN ADVANCE! I will.

I always am constantly looking in the rear of my vehicle and all around. Too many crazy drivers. But not everyone does that - unfortunately.

The only problem with your twisted Logic is this:

Until 1975 if a Police Officer SHOT AN UNARMED PERSON, It was AUTOMATIC CRIMINAL PROSECUTION for Manslaughter and immediate FIRING and LOSS of Pension.

This was BEFORE PUBLIC UNIONS, After, well, you see how many UNARMED people are Killed by Police.

Well... that’s an interesting point.

How does he know when an emergency vehicle is in close proximity?

Isn’t it a danger to first responders as they go through intersections?

Yes, another response from the “Officers should take the first shot in the head” crowd.

Thanks.

That is not what I said or Implied, I do NOT BELIEVE in SPECIAL RIGHTS for ANYONE, He should be treated the exact same way as you or I if we KILLED AN UNARMED PERSON.

There is NO SUCH THING in the LAW as Being “In fear for your life” on a PUBLIC STREET AGAINST AN UNARNMED MAN 50 feet away.

Ah ... if you are truly deaf, you are deprived of the sense of hearing.

It’s what you implied.

You express your thoughts, and it’s up to the person listening to check you. You think the guy should be able to get out of the car and raise his hand toward the officer from a blind position, and the officer should stand there and accept a bullet if that’s what the man intended.

There’s really no wiggle room on it. That’s what you believe.

It’s not what I believe.

“If he was deaf and he happened not to look in rear view mirror, how could he know the police were trying to pull him over?”

Maybe he might notice the reflection of the flashing lights and the high beams illuminating the entire interior of his vehicle...
