DEVELOPING: A U.S. Navy coastal patrol ship fired warning shots at an Iranian ship that sailed within 200 yards in the Northern Persian Gulf Wednesday in the second close call this week involving U.S. and Iranian vessels, a U.S. official confirmed to Fox News on Thursday.

The USS Squall fired the shots, according to the official.

In the earlier incident, four Iranian small boats "harassed" the USS Nitze Tuesday, sailing near the guided missile destroyer in the Persian Gulf, a U.S. Navy official told Fox News. The U.S. Navy described the incident as "unsafe and unprofessional" and said it occurred in international waters in the narrow Strait of Hormuz.

U.S. Navy video of the incident showed American sailors on the Nitze firing flares and sounding the warship's horn as the Iranian boats approached. The official said the Nitze was ultimately forced to change its course to avoid the Iranian ships, despite coming close to offshore oil rigs.

They should have sunk all four and say that’s the price of 4 hostages and 1.7 billion dollars.

I bet the decision to fire warning shots instead of sinking them came from the top banana.

Unbelievable. They risk an oil spill to "accommodate" the Iranian harassers. At least the 2nd go, they fired on the Iranian ships.

I'm not that familiar with the geography but if Iran holds the Straits of Hormuz, do they control a great deal of the oil flow to the rest of the world?

“Unsafe and unprofessional”.

Are you f!@#$%^ kidding me?

Their first response should have been to send these sabre-rattlers straight to,the bottom.

But that isn’t going to happen seeing as how obama is so buddy-buddy with the ayatollahs over their.

Hell, he’s even flying in plane loads of cash to them, he likes them that much.

at an Iranian ship that sailed...

It "sailed"? Are they trying to paint a picture of an Iranian Skiff (made of paper) or perhaps an Iranian "ship of the line"?

Yes, and under Obama, Iran is top dog.

“They risk an oil spill to “accommodate” the Iranian harassers.”

To ram them would have been an act of war.

Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

At first glance, it looks like Iraq, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Qatar are reliant on this route...maybe Iraq has a pipeline that goes some other way, but it looks like a lot of oil must go through there.

That’s their message to obama, “send more money, NOW”. To which he will no doubt dutifully respond.

As of a few years ago, 20% of the world’s oil went through the Strait. I believe the percent has been declining for years, but still critical for China and Japan, I think.

If we had a president, they’d have fired the “warning” shot into the hull amidships and said, “Oops...Sorry...Our calibrations were off...”

At some point the Iranians will find out that they shouldn’t be buying their naval ships from BassPro.

Must have been the lowest bidder or sumthin’.

It SAILED. Even on the town-sized ship I served on never “Motored” or “Oared” or “Rowed” across the Pacific.
The ship picked up its mooring lines and off we SAILED. IG really has come to mean, crossing a body of water, no matter what the power source is.
