THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK

IRVING BERLIN

”ALWAYS”

Peggy’s career had gone into eclipse during the British Invasion, but she came back in 1969 with “Is That All There Is?” In 1974 she left Capitol for Atlantic to work with the great Jerry Wexler, who had produced Aretha Franklin from 1967 onward. Jerry gave Peggy a 2/2 time signature R&B arrangement that would have fit Aretha well. It’s a measure of a great standard that could survive this treatment and thrive.
