I vaguely remember that...............
This is so confusing to me. Maybe because I grew up in a VERY diverse neighborhood. (The only family of blonds for many blocks.) But, I do not understand why fried chicken and watermelon are off limits to “African Americans”. I just don’t get it. We grew up on fried chicken and my favorite fruit was definitely watermelon when we could afford it.
So, what is the offense??? Did Blacks create this dish or did watermelon come from African? Or is there some kind of taboo that I don’t know about? I never had this issue in our neighborhood. If I asked a friend if they wanted to come over for chicken dinner, I did not have my mouth washed out. Again, probably the blond hair causing my lack of sense about this issue.
These are but two of a sample.................
I used to have an old book THREE YEARS IN ARKANSAW in which a black woman is found to be apparently dead. No one would touch her to find out so they cooked up some fried chicken and passed it under her nose. Since she did NOT make a grab for it they concluded she was really dead.
