Revolution against 'rich parasites' at utopian Burning Man Festival as 'hooligans' attack(T)

It is supposed to be a utopian vision of peace and love but this year's Burning Man Festival has been marred by "hooligans" carrying out a "revolution against rich parasites".

The festival plays out each year in Nevada's Black Rock Desert where 70,000 people build a city in a week, burn a giant wooden effigy of a man, and then restore the arid playa to its original state.

In recent years it has become popular with Silicon Valley millionaires, and billionaires. Luxurious so-called "plug-n-play" camps have sprung up which use hired staff like cooks, builders and security, and allow international jetsetters to drop in for quick visits.

Many traditional "Burners" claim that is a betrayal of the spirit of "radical self-reliance" that is a cornerstone of the festival, which began in 1986.

As anger boiled over one camp called White Ocean, which hosts high profile DJs on a state-of-the-art stage, became the focus of anger.

The camp first made an appearance at Burning Man three years ago and its founders included the British DJ Paul Oakenfold and the son of a Russian billionaire.

Why yes, that is a smirk on my face. We get to see some of the luxury motor coaches that make the arduous journey to the brutal conditions at the playa. I've been wondering how long the "true burners"(new age hippies) would indulge this influx of the uber rich and famous. I understand katy perry was there and paris hilton and probably many other celebs as well. Yeah, a little primitive camping out in the desert does a body good. Now, for you commoners, go take a bath.

Perfect ground zero site for a low-yield nuke blast.

Love the Quiznos commercial parodying this pagan festival. The organizers hated it so much they wanted to sue Quiznos, but could not because it is a parody.

From what I understand the commercial is pretty close to the truth about BM.

Further proof that utopia is impossible to achieve. Human nature trumps all.

The hypocrisy of Burning Man is wide and deep:

World class traffic jams as 60,000 people drive down a rural two lane road. In addition, more fossil fuel is wasted as these 60,000 people fly and drive in from great distances while claiming to be friends of the earth.

Claiming to be against creature comforts while the ultra rich bring their creature comforts with them.

Claiming to be egalitarian—see above.

Seeking closeness to the planet through meditation while the motorcycle engines roar and thousands are making all kinds of noise.

There must be a hypocrisy gene in our DNA—we humans can be such jerks.

That was too funny! Like nothing has changed since Woodstock except for the affluence. Same hippie mysticism & self indulgence asking the same existential question:

“What do I have to do to get laid around here?”

Reminds me of a bee hive. Thus the hive mentality...

Only, bee hives operate in total harmony.

It’s a shame this couldn’t.
